Twenty feet up in a walnut webbed feet curve around a branch, the balcony of your palatial nest built by the pileated best of woodpeckers. He s long gone; now you stand looking down at the shoreline, undisputed queen of a tiny, waveless backwater – it s small, but it s all yours – you tilt a white-ringed eye just to be sure — and satisfied, you spread your wings, show off your hidden patch of jewel – sapphire and emerald gleam briefly between brown velvet feathers. You pluck a wayward bit of fluff from your breast and let it float upon the breeze. You do not wait to watch it reach the ground; you turn, you go inside to warm the eggs.
