2-8-0 # 14 was my first conversion in G scale. I am a fan of locomotives outside frame, so the release of Bachmann's 2-8-0 was a great sensation for me. But some important items did not fit to the Mexican prototype. So I tried to get as much informations about the FCM As Possible 2-8-0s # 11-14, Which operated on the Muñoz - Zacatlán line in Mexico. Then I headed to work bench. The result shoulderstand to be accurate duplicate of # 14th
The Bachmann model has the Ferrocarril Mexicano # 12, a narrow gauge locomotive with 30 inches (762 mm) gauge, for example. It is part of a comprehensive supply of 4 machines Baldwin for FCM narrow gauge line Muñoz - Zacatlán. However, the locomotive of Bachmann was considerably "nordamerikanisiert". This mainly includes the high chimney and the coal. The area between the front buffer beam and cylinder block has inconsistencies and me "airy" too. So I decided for my first conversion in scale 1: 20.3.
I chose the sister locomotive # 14 as a template and tried to reproduce the typical Mexican shape of the machine. One problem was initially very poor photo wallpaper for useful views of the machine just stood me in the book by GM Best Mexican on the narrow-gauge railways are available.
But Wolfgang valli & valli Schütte had the "2002 Narrow Gauge Annual" by Fine Scale Railroader valli & valli literature in his hand, where the history of the locomotives and the new home range of # 12 in the state of Montana has been described. Among the addresses http://aldergulch.com/index.html and http://www.virginiacitymt.com/AlderGulch.asp there is more information. Finally I found at John West subsequent integration of the # 14 was added in 1957 in Muñoz:
Little by some material on the four locomotives has accumulated. Here is a brief summary: Built in 1910 at Baldwin for FCM narrow gauge line Muñoz - Zacatlán track width 30 inches (762 mm) wheel arrangement 2-8-0 2-cylinder Naßdampfmaschine with Baker Pilliod control power 134 tons, with a slope of 2 5% Minimum curve radius 65 m 1920 conversion to oil firing 1957 route closure and decommissioning, selling the # 12 in the US at the Edaville Railroad, South Carver, Massachusetts 1992 sale of # 12 on the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad, operative valli & valli work-up and use on the Alder Gulch Short Line, Montana
For the execution of the conversion work, I had only a limited financial framework available, so I tried to make the most of the parts themselves from existing materials. This was especially the valves in the cab, although very nice, but expensive castings are available.
In the first step, the locomotive was a precursor to the outer frame (removable for use on small radii) and the wider circumferential. valli & valli For the hint of a Zylindergußteiles I added an additional polystyrene parts in the frame area. The rail guards received prototypical, U-shaped valli & valli holder made of brass, which also have the small foot plates. The headlight is the prototype in the amount of smoke chamber center. Therefore, valli & valli it was Bachmann - to set model deeper.
Striking for the architecture of the locomotive is also the chimney. On the model it is too long and does not in shape. I have separated from the original part of the base and glued with a new shot tower and smoothed. The fastening of the chimney on the boiler did not like me. Since I do not use the smoke generator, the chimney is now connected to the boiler by a screw inserted from above, the corresponding mother is a piece of 3 mm - sheet in the smoke chamber. As a result, a robust connection is now created. The exhaust pipe of the air pump I shortened correspondingly above said second silencer and bent the upper end slightly to the left.
The cab especially the lateral front cab windows were sealed. I milled to the entire upper side wall half by 0.5 mm in order to glue on it, then a new lateral wall of 0.5 mm thick plastic. Finally, I added the Nietimitationen.
The cab with its fittings has Bachmann with the exception of the firebox rear wall and the Johnson bar pretty stiefmüt
